SIM Re-registration

The Regulation requires that all SIM users, both existing and new, register their SIMs with their respective mobile network operators. In accordance with the new Regulation, new registration and/or re-registration process will require the SIM holder to provide the following:

  • National ID card / Passport
  • Proof of address (e.g., a recent Utility bill)
  • A selfie (for verification purposes)

and personal information with official database.  

The Regulation will be effective as from 31st October 2023 and applies to all SIM holders, both local and foreign, and companies using SIM Cards purchased in the Republic of Mauritius.

SIM cards include physical SIM, eSIM, M2M SIM (tablets, smartwatches, Point of Sales (POS) mobile dongles, cameras and IOT devices such as smart meters among others).

Henceforth, new customers purchasing a SIM card will have to register the SIM before its activation by providing their NID / Passport, proof of address and a photo capture. For existing my.t mobile customers, every holder will have to re-register their SIMs on https://myt.mu/re-registration by latest 30th April 2024. Failing to do so will lead to the automatic deactivation of SIM cards. 

According to the Information and Communication Technologies (Registration of SIM) Regulations 2023, all SIM users, both existing and new, must register/ re-register their SIMs with their respective mobile network operators as from 31st October 2023.

The Regulation aims to protect mobile subscribers from illegal activities such as mobile scams, smishing, and fraud as the identity of any mobile number associated with a SIM card is henceforth verified and established.

The Regulation covers all types of SIMs: physical SIM, eSIM, M2M SIM (tablets, smartwatches, Point of Sales (POS), mobile dongles, cameras and IOT devices such as smart meters among others).

Yes, once you’re 18, you can register the SIM under your name. Your parent or guardian should visit a Telecom Shop and request a transfer of ownership on your name in writing. Following the transfer of ownership, you will have to register the SIM in your name.

No, SIM Registration is free of charge to all existing and new subscribers.

The mobile number will be allocated to a new subscriber at least 6 months after the deactivation.

Any person who provides any information or furnishes any document which is false, or misleading shall commit an offence and upon conviction, shall be liable to a fine of 50,000 Rupees; and imprisonment not exceeding one year.

Any personal data that a subscriber will provide for SIM Registration will be stored and processed in accordance with SIM Regulation, the Data protection Act 2017, and the Privacy Policy of Cellplus Mobile Communications Ltd.

In case the SIM is destroyed or damaged, you are required to report same to a Telecom Shop along with the damaged SIM. A new SIM card will be provided after successful verification of the original registration and ownership of the SIM.

In case of loss or theft, you are requested to report to the Police within 48 hours and produce the Police memo to a Telecom Shop when requesting replacement of the SIM.

As from 31st October 2023, all new customers will have to register their SIM before its activation. This can be done:

  • In a Telecom Shop
  • At the authorised agent of Cellplus Mobile Communications Ltd while purchasing the SIM card

Yes, you can register more than one SIM card as long as you are the holder of the SIM.

Yes, during the re-registration process, you will receive a verification code to ensure you are the person using the SIM.

During the re-registration process, a verification code will be sent to the mobile number. You will have to input the code, thus confirming you are the owner of the SIM.

In accordance with the new Regulation, the registration and/or re-registration process will require the SIM holder to provide the following:

  • Individual user: Visit a Telecom Shop with the following documents: your NID, a proof of address, NID and original death certificate of previous owner.
  • Corporate: If the SIM was under the name of a company, you will in addition require a letter of authorization from the company. Note that the company has 30 days to allocate the SIM to another person.

You can provide other proof of address: rent book, duly signed letter from landlord together with utility bill under landlord name (not older than 3 months) NID/passport of landlord.

  • A duly signed letter from the family
  • A utility bill under the family name

No. If your child is under 18, the SIM must be registered under the parent’s name.

Yes. All SIM cards, including Premium SIMs, will be automatically deactivated if not re-registered by latest 30 April 2024.

If you do not have a proof of address in your own name, you will need to provide the following when registering or re-registering a SIM card:

  • A copy of your NID or passport, whichever is applicable. This confirms your identity.
  • A letter from the owner or authorized resident of the location where you live. This letter should certify and confirm that you reside at that address.
  • A copy of an official proof of address document (e.g. utility bill) in the name of the person certifying your address. This verifies their address.
  • A copy of the NID or passport of the person certifying your address. This verifies their identity.
